Our committees run the club’s workshops, shows and projects. Every member is encouraged to join at least one.

Floral Design
The Floral Design Committee offers the opportunity to learn and practice the art of floral design. The committee provides programs, workshops and demonstrations that teach the basic principles and elements of design, such as form, balance, texture, scale and color, as they relate to the many styles of floral design.
GCA floral design rules and requirements for flower show exhibitions are presented. The committee stages two judged club shows annually that showcase members’ designs. Members are also encouraged to exhibit in outside events such as zone shows, museum art-in-bloom exhibitions and major flower shows.

Horticulture
The Horticulture Committee teaches the membership about gardening with workshops and speakers on propagation, pollination, encouraging the use of native plants, and increasing knowledge of many different species. With the Visiting Gardens Committee, there are trips to area gardens to learn about design as well as plant species.
Horticulture shows are held at membership meetings twice a year. In 2019 the committee built a boxed saltwater native plant exhibit for the Garden Club of America Annual Meeting in Boston.

Conservation
The Conservation Committee introduces members to regional conservation issues and educates the public on environmental concerns: clean water and air, setting aside land for ecological and recreational use, and clean highways. The committee works with schools, municipalities and organizations in the area.
PGC worked with the Dover school system to produce a book about the Cocheco River and its evolution since the 1600s, and a video about the history of Portsmouth and the Piscataqua River. The project ended with a boat trip and environmental lessons for the students. Members can also travel to Washington, DC with GCA’s National Affairs and Legislation Committee to meet their representatives about current environmental legislation.
